The stolen vehicle count continues to rise whether it is by theft of motor vehicle or by hijacking; criminals continue to gain at the loss of others.

Over the past weekend four vehicles were reported stolen while another was reported hijacked.
On April 14 two vehicles were reported stolen in two separate incidents. The first occurred in the late afternoon when the owner of a Mazda Rustler parked in Rose Innes Street to attend a meeting. When the meeting concluded he returned to where his vehicle had been parked only to find it had been stolen. Similarly a man borrowed his brother’s car and parked it in Louise Street and he also returned to the vehicle only to find it stolen.

On April 15, a man residing in Old Coronation returned to his home at about 02:00 and parked his car outside his house. When he awoke the following morning at about 06:20 he realised that his car had been stolen, the vehicle was valued at R38 000.

The last vehicle reported stolen was that of a Volkswagen Polo classic. The owner had parked his car in a parking lot along Mandela Street, when he returned to his vehicle the following day he discovered that the vehicle valued at R25 000 had been stolen.

On April 16 Mr Sifiso Maseko was travelling in Da Vinci Street when he was beset by armed robbers in a white BMW X5.

“They prevented me from driving away by blocking my path. Three guys got out the car, two of them were armed with firearms,” said Maseko.

The robbers removed Maseko from his car and pushed him into the X5, one of them then got into his Mercedes C63 AMG and they drove in the direction of Johannesburg.

“They covered my face, while driving one of them pointed the gun at me and demanded the pin to my bank cards, they searched me thoroughly and took my possessions,” he said.

At around 17:00 they dropped Maseko off just outside Soweto near one of the townships. He was then able to borrow a phone from someone passing by and contacted his brother for assistance.

“They didn’t hurt me but they did take all my documentation including my baby girl’s birth certificate,” he said.
