Here are some love stories for V-day with angles you may not be aware of.
Juliet Prowse, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Eric Forrester
In the early 60s, South African dancer and actress Juliet Prowse was engaged to Frank Sinatra, had an affair with Elvis Presley and was later married to John McCook who plays Eric Forrester in The Bold and the Beautiful.
Sinatra described Prowse as “the sexiest dancer I’ve ever seen”. He began an affair with her and featured her in two of his television specials.
When Sinatra proposed marriage with the condition that Prowse give up her career, she refused. “I am ambitious and have possibilities to be great,” she said. Unfortunately refusing Sinatra signalled the end of her dreams of greatness.
Prowse starred opposite Elvis Presley in G.I. Blues in 1960. During shooting of the film they had a short, intense fling. As the cabaret performer, Prowse won praise from critics for her exciting dance routines and her pert performance. The director Norman Taurog later recounted that he had to shout “Cut!” several times to separate the two stars during their kissing scenes. Prowse later married John McCook who is the father of her only child, Seth.
Behati Prinsloo and Adam Levine
Victoria Secret model Behati Prinsloo began dating Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine in 2012. They announced their engagement in July 2013 and married in Mexico in July 2014. They are plagued with divorce rumours, but deny that their marriage is on the rocks.
When you’re an international superstar like Adam Levine, you probably don’t need the approval of many, but Behati’s father Boet Prinsloo confirmed that Adam spoke to the family who live in Namibia before asking for Behati’s hand in marriage. “We are happy to have Adam as part of the family.”
Leah and Archbishop Desmond Tutu – 60 years of loyalty and love
On 2 July 1955 Desmond Tutu married Nomalizo Leah Shenxane (aka. Leah Tutu), a teacher who he met while being at college. They have four children and seven grandchildren together. Last year retired archbishop Tutu, known throughout South Africa as “Arch,” celebrated 60 years of marriage with his wife Leah. The couple renewed their wedding vows in the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Johannesburg.
Charlene Wittstock and Albert II, Prince of Monaco
South African Olympic swimmer, Charlene Wittstock, became Princess of Monaco when she married Albert II, Prince of Monaco in July 2011.
The wedding was described as Monaco’s “biggest party in 55 years”, the biggest since the wedding of Albert’s parents, Rainier III and Oscar winning actress Grace Kelly. Prince Albert and Charlene first met in 2000 at a swimming competition in Monaco in which she was participating. The couple were first seen together in 2006. Speculation was rife that they were getting married in 2009. They finally announced their engagement on 23 June 2010.
Charlene Wittstock was born in Zimbabwe, but moved to South Africa with her family when she was 12.
Prince Albert and Princess Charlene celebrated their twins Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella turning one on December 10 last year.
