Sangoma arrested for pointing a firearm

After a search in the house, a Norica pistol with one round of ammunition together with a holster were found

A sangoma has been arrested for a pointing a firearm at one of her ‘students’

According to Vosman communication officer Captain Klaas Maloka who affected the arrest, Sophie Sambo (37) was arrested at Empumelelweni on Thursday, August 20.

He said it was about 13:00 when a police vehicle was patrolling between Empumelelweni and Hlalanikahle Extension 4 (Phase 4) when they were stopped by one Ms Sisizile Mathenjwa (32) who is a student sangoma (letwasana) to Sambo.

After stopping the police Mathenjwa reported that Sambo was threatening and was chasing her. They also found traditional attire (used by sangomas) and beads around the scene which indicated that there was a fight. The police took the clothes and beads and took both victim and complainant to a house where they stay in Empumelelweni. The house is owned by Sambo.

In the house three other sangoma students were found in the house, and they showed a lot of respect to Sambo, according to Captain Maloka. After a search in the house, a Norica pistol with one round of ammunition together with a holster were found. Sambo produced a firearm licence dated 2000, subject to verification. After that she was informed that she was under arrest for pointing a firearm.

Sambo might be charged for allegations that last week at about 19:00 she took Mathenjwa to Kromdraai Cemetery and fired shots in the air threatening the victim and saying that she does not respect her any more.

The firearm has been sent for ballistic test.
