Armed robbery foiled by swift thinking

Mr Jerry Modise was tricked by armed robbers, but he got the last laugh.

On July 10, Modise had just left his workplace in Benoni and gotten into his car when he was approached by a man who said he had a flat tyre.
“I opened my door and got out of the car to check, one of the two guys drew a gun and pointed it at me and told me to get back into the car,” said Modise.

The two suspects got into the car with Modise and told him to drive, as they neared the RDP houses near Delmas, one of the suspects noticed a white light in the car and asked Modise about it.
“I told them it was the panic button and that police had been informed and were on their way to recover my vehicle,” he said.

The suspects, believing Modise searched his belongings and stole his cellular phone as well as the company phone, they also took his money – they told him to stop along the N12 highway and both got out of the vehicle and ran towards the RDP housing.

Modise was later able to contact his manager who advised him to report the incident at the nearest police station, which happened to be Witbank Police Station.
“I don’t advise people to trick would be high-jackers or robbers, they should rather drive to the nearest garage to check a puncture, and at least be aware of their surroundings and people near their car,” said Modise.
