Watch AfriForum first potholes fixed

AfriForum did not wait for the municipality to tackle the potholes problem in the city and took matters into their own hands.

They started repairing potholes in Gazelle Road in front of Laerskool Reynorif last week.
They did this at a cost of R86 450 as part of a do-it-yourself project.
The civil rights organisation hired a private contractor and also has plans to repair potholes in the vicinity of Hoërskool Patriot, Laerskool Klipfontein and Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog.

This follows after Emalahleni Local Municipality’s failure to maintain roads in the town.
“We cannot sit back and wait for the day when the municipality decides to one day perform its duties and solve problems again. We have to roll up our sleeves and repair the potholes ourselves,” said Mr Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum’s Assistant Coordinator.

Grobbelaar explained that the critical condition of roads, especially those around schools, is a big hazard for motorists and pedestrians, including scholars.
“We cannot allow that the safety of our children is threatened due to the municipality’s incompetence. The road in front of Laerskool Reynorif has now been fully repaired and it is now safe to be used once again by both scholars and road users. It also eases the stress that rested on the shoulders of concerned parents and teachers,” said Mr Paul Broodryk, Chairperson of the AfriForum branch in eMalahleni.
