Fire at cemetery a problem

A lot of people visit cemeteries during the Easter holidays to pay respect to the dearly departed.

Even though people have different beliefs, they agreed that cemeteries should be kept clean and dignified.

Some members of the community were disappointed to find grass being burned in some parts of Old Pretoria Road Cemetery. It is not known who started the fire, but the people were concerned as some of the tombstones were affected by the fire and some of the ornaments were burned as well.

In the past, members of the community have volunteered their services cleaning the cemetery. A lot has happened also over the years with theft and crime reported at the cemetery. Tombstones, steel bars securing graves, and steel name tags were reportedly stolen at the cemetery.
“Whoever started the fire is not doing a good job because some ornaments and tombstones are affected by the flames. If people cannot clean the graves, they must just leave them in peace,” said one woman found cleaning a grave at the cemetery.

Some parts of the cemetery were cleaned and the community members really appreciated that.
