Student uninjured as plane crash-lands

A small plane next to the Verena road caught the eye of road-users last weekend.

Members of the community ran abuzz with the news of a ‘plane crash’ after the Piper Cherokee Warrior had to make an emergency landing.
Emergency services including the Zello-group, Witbank 911, arrived on scene on Saturday, February 28 minutes after the plane landed unexpectedly, not far from Witbank Airfield.

“The pilot is a student, who made his third last flight before getting his license,” another pilot, Mr Theo Luus, said on Monday, March 2.
Luus and his co-pilot, Mr Juan Degenaar, were flying behind ZS-JOD before it went down, saying that the student had veered a little off course. They had been flying form Springs to Middleburg when the student flying the plane experienced a ‘mechanical problem’.

Witbank 911 arrived on the scene shortly after the plane crash-landed.

“As he made an emergency landing next to the Verena road he hit a big hole in the ground which took off two wheels,” Luus further said.
Luckily the student, who’s unnamed, was unharmed after his rough landing. The damaged plane was transported back to Springs on Monday morning.
