Young children hit in two accidents

Two accidents involving children are a concern to Vosman police and they want to warn parents to be extra careful with their little ones.

Five-year-old Karabo Motaung was hit by a car in George Bizos Street, Vosman on Wednesday, October 22 at about 16:00. According to the driver of the Nissan Skyline, Mr Mpolekane Kgweti, his car was being push-started by a group of boys.

While they were pushing the car in the street, they passed a parked car on the right, and as the pushed car was gaining momentum, Karabo came running from behind the parked car and was hit. The driver said he did not see the child and only noticed her after he had already hit her.

Ms Dudu Motaung, mother of the girl, said she was called and told her child had been hit, while they were walking from pre-school together with three other children, including an elder sister.
“I was told that just before they reached home, Karabo went to a nearby house. A few minutes later, when they were looking for her, they found out that she had been hit by the car. Her 11-year-old sister picked her up and she was rushed to hospital.”

Karabo was discharged from the hospital on Monday, October 27 and according to her mother she was doing well, thought she was complaining of pain and could not walk unaided. The mother said she was hurt on the forehead, right side of her face, left leg and arm as well as both her knees.

The driver was charged with reckless and negligent driving.
According to the police, a car in Extension 18 hit a four-year-old child on Saturday, October 25 at about 13:45. Six children were running in the main road and the car came in their direction.
It is said the driver of the car tried to brake the car but failed, as the child slipped and fell underneath the car.
The other children ran away but later returned.

The child was badly injured and was taken to hospital.
Efforts to speak to the family failed.

Captain Klaas Maloka, Vosman Police Station Communication Officer warned parents to be extra careful when sending their children to school and collecting them. He said parents must ensure that children are sent and collected by older children or parents.
