Muthali family finds relief as police sergeant’s bail is denied

Sergeant Walter Masindi, who is accused of brutally murdering Elsie Muthali, was denied bail by the Witbank Magistrate’s Court.

The Muthali family can finally breathe a sigh of relief after the Witbank Magistrate’s Court denied bail to Sergeant Walter Masindi, accused of brutally murdering their daughter, Elsie Muthali.

This decision on Friday, September 27, by the court brings some comfort to the grieving family, who had expressed deep concerns about their safety if Masindi were to be released.

The EFF Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Desk in Mpumalanga also opposed Masindi’s bail, submitting a petition with over 250 signatures from concerned eMalahleni residents.

EFF GBVF Desk Provincial Coordinator, Dimakatso Phahlamoraswi, emphasized that Masindi, as a trained police officer, had sworn to protect the community, not harm those he claimed to love.

Masindi allegedly shot Elsie multiple times while she was driving on the Bethal Road on September 1, causing her vehicle to crash.

He later surrendered to the Witbank Police Station, handing over the firearm believed to have been used in the murder.
Masindi is set to return to court on October 30.
