State Capture and Beyond fighting corruption and fostering accountability in SA

State Capture and Beyond campaign seeks to address corruption and promote accountability through various strategies.

State Capture and Beyond campaign project brief along with other stakeholders, have launched a nationwide campaign to combat corruption and promote government accountability in South Africa.

According to the State Capture and Beyond campaign since the dawn of democracy in 1994, South Africa has faced significant challenges, including law economic growth, high unemployment, and widespread inequality in public procurement, has severely hindered the delivery of essential services like healthcare, housing, education, water, and electricity.

Corruption disproportionately affects women, children, and people living with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

Nearly half of all rural households are headed by women, and in 2021, over 42% of households in South Africa were led by women.

The campaign seeks to address corruption and promote accountability through various strategies.

On Tuesday, September 17, the campaign hosted a panel discussion in eMalahleni to explore solutions.

“We need to organise at a high, hyper-local level to face challenges and have a voice when it comes to unemployment rates and other development issues in South Africa,” said Rehad Desai from Human Rights Media Trust.

“In South Africa, there are a high number of unemployed people. We’re here today to develop consensus among key stakeholders on what’s needed for transition to happen,” Desai said.

Andile Zulu from a world class organisation emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, “One thing we’ve been working on is the climate crisis. How do we deal with it? We have to transition away from coal, oil and gas, but without sacrificing jobs.”

Leanne Govindsamy from the Centre for Environmental Rights added, “It’s not about how we transition, but how it happens and affects each and every one of you. We want to ensure the transition is fair, transparent, and serves the needs of all South Africans.”

Some of the key statistics that were addressed were that:

-42% of the population is unemployed

-18 million people live on R35 per day

-10% of the country owns 80% of the wealth.

To address these challenges, the campaign advocates for transitioning to renewable energy, economic system reform, accountability and transparency.

“Transitioning without addressing the three crises, unemployment, poverty, and gender inequality is unsustainable,” said Andile.

The State Capture and Beyond campaign is a critical step toward creating a more just equitable society in South Africa.

By working together, we can combat corruption, promote accountability, and ensure a brighter future for all.
