Gaping hole celebrates three months

The hole left behind after a pipe was fixed in Libertas Street was highlighted in all the ward committee meetings held since the pipe was fixed.

One can debate, whether the municipality is proactive or are they just slack?

This question is on the table after they fixed a water pipe in Libertas Street on June 10.

A gaping hole, covering half of the road in Libertas Street, was left open.

Was the hole left open to make their job easier next time the pipe bursts, and they have to come out and fix it?

Or is it pure negligence as the gaping hole was forgotten?

“Who oversees this, is there any after-visit conducted to see if the job was done right and the site cleared up?” asked John Cornish who uses Libertas Street every day.

“This is an accident waiting to happen. The street lights do not work, and the road is pitching dark at night. If someone who is not familiar with the area drives this road at night, they are going to cause serious damage to the vehicle,” Cornish said.

This problem was highlighted in all the ward committee meetings held since the pipe was fixed.

The dangerous hole was also reported to the municipality on several occasions, but up to date, nothing was done.

“There are multiple sites around Ward 20 where after repairs either for cables or pipes, the sites are left excavated for months, even years. This specific excavated space in Libertas Street poses a danger to road users as it forces vehicles to use the oncoming lane. I have reported and requested restoration of the site numerous times and this has been a submitted request from the Ward 20 ward committee as well, but to date, no response and no services,” said ward councillor Maureen Scheepers.
