Stands next to Thubies reason for concern

According to the municipality, allocations of RDPs in Ga-Nala were stopped in 2022.

Approximately 500 RDP houses are being built in various areas in Emalahleni.

“These are projects which were allocated between 2016 and 2019, and have a full complement of beneficiaries,” said municipal spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng.

On the downside, allocations of RDPs in Ga-Nala were stopped in 2022.

Allegations of corruption and councillors allegedly selling RDPs surfaced.

“We are not aware of councillors allocating stands, however, allegations that came through to our offices point directly at concerned groups,” Mofokeng said.

He said concerned groups allegedly interfered and caused complications therefore the decision was made to stop the allocation of RDPs.

He explained the councillors identify beneficiaries and they compile a list to submit to officials.

Officials contact identified beneficiaries through the ward councillors to complete subsidy application forms. Once approved, completed houses are handed over to rightful beneficiaries.

The RDP programme provides beneficiaries with fully built houses offered free of charge by the government.

However, beneficiaries of RDPs are still required to pay for all municipal rates including water, electricity, and other service surcharges.
