‘Busy’ night streets a threat to motorists

Residents warned of carjacking syndicate on eMalahleni streets

A violent carjacking syndicate is wreaking havoc on specific streets in the City of Coal.

The suspects, allegedly working with individuals posing as ladies of the night, have allegedly been hijacking vehicles and committing violent crimes on Plumer-, French-, Allenby-, and Duncan Streets.

According to Witbank Police Station Spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall, there is a carjacking syndicate in these streets allegedly operating with the ladies of the night to hijack vehicles of those visiting there at night.

Hall said the hijackers are brazen and violent and would hijack any car in the vicinity.

Recent incidents include: “On Sunday, August 25, two ladies were robbed from their vehicles and taken to Kromdraai, where they were both allegedly raped. SAPS managed to recover the vehicle in Gauteng,” said Hall.

Two days earlier a man was hospitalised after being shot and hijacked on Duncan Street on, August 23.
According to police reports, the complainant alleged that he was dropping off his friend at around 20:15.

While waiting for his friend to return, he was on his phone when he heard his car door opening on both sides.

One suspect allegedly entered on the driver’s side with a firearm, and two other suspects reportedly entered on the passenger’s side.
The suspect at the back pulled the cellphone from his hand, bit him, and the one with a firearm shot him in the right leg.
He started screaming for help, and the suspect shot him again.

This alerted people in the neighbourhood and as they came out, the suspects fled with the victim’s car.
The suspects remain at large.

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when visiting these streets, especially after 18:00.
The community is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety when traveling on these streets.

Anyone with information regarding the carjacking syndicate is encouraged to contact the SAPS immediately.
