Sewerage spills and stink a nuisance for residents

Residents of eMalahleni have municipal problems that are relative to others, however their main problem is raw sewerage running into their main supply of water.

In past weeks a drainage system was reported to the municipality and they were made aware of the problem that has occurred at the Naauwpoort area.

Residents in that area were unable to get through the road without driving through the sludge that had formed on their road. The stench was unbearable when near the road that leads to the homes of some of Emalahleni’s residents.

The situation has now become worse and attempts to get an explanation from the municipality on their plans to rehabilitate the issue were fruitless. It has been more than two weeks since the incident was reported and recently again the problem has resurfaced, worse than before.
The main concern of the resident who raised the red flag, Lee Sampson, was that the dirty, filthy and stinking water runs into Witbank Dam, which is the source of water for eMalahleni residents.

It was not only the people that were concerned about their health, a resident from Santika Estate, Shaleen van Jaarsveld, in Reyno Ridge also raised the red flag on sewerage that is leaking into the nature reserve and the animals now also have to deal with the filth. The animals risk dying from many bacteria that is found in human waste and also, the people are even at a greater risk of contracting illnesses.

The municipality has been asked for comment more than two weeks ago and have yet to reply.
