Local college opens Voter Education Dialogue for students

The Nkangala TVET College voter education dialogue was attended by Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, the Independent Electoral Commission and stakeholders.

The Nkangala TVET College, Emalahleni Campus, hosted its first-ever voter education dialogue.

In partnership with the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Higher Health, and stakeholders, the college successfully held a dialogue under the theme ‘The 2024 National Government Election: 30 years into democracy’.

The dialogue was held at Emalahleni Civic Hall on Wednesday, May 8.

Mr Cain Maimela, principal of the college welcomed esteemed guests, and the panel, “I hope that the learners here today will learn something, and share with their peers the importance of youth participation,” Maimela shared.

He also emphasised that those who choose anarchy over engagement usually do not have content, “The people with content like to engage and convince one another. I hope our learners will have a fruitful dialogue, and thank you for the opportunity,” Maimela said.

IEC Democracy Education Facilitator (DEF) representative, Slindokuhle Maseko shared that her job is to educate the youth about the importance of voting, and the mandate of the IEC, “I hope that by the time we wrap up this event, the majority of the youth that attended will be inspired to vote,” Maseko encouraged.

She also tipped first-time voters to read through and familiarise themselves with the different political party’s manifestos.

Automotive engineering student at Mpondozankomo Campus, Agrippa Themba, outlined that during the dialogue he learned about the importance of democracy as a citizen of the country.
