Mmabatho exhibits her creative abilities through poetry

Local poet from eMalahleni showcasing her artistic skills through her love of poetry.

Mmabatho Mashigo (30), a local poet, enriches cognitive abilities and helps the youth in her community develop their creativity and imagination.

Mmabatho is based in eMalahleni and currently, scouts kids who have a love for poetry, signs them with her talent agency and provides opportunities for them to be able to showcase their artistic capabilities.

“I started playing with words in my books, writing biblical poems, and performing at church,” said Mmabatho.

She always had a passion for reading and writing, learning new words, checking out their meanings, and playing around with words has always been her thing as she enjoys using synonyms instead of the actual words.

“Growing up, I was told my voice was golden and deserved to be on the radio,” she said.

In her journey of writing biblical poems, Mmabatho’s pastor supported her and gave her a slot on Sundays to perform her poems.

From youth services to main services, she was praised for both her voice and the beautiful words she used.

Through her poems, she got invitations to render poems at a couple of events around the community.

“I remember my first was in God’s Love Worship Centre,” she explained.

Her love for poetry got steered up when she was watching SA’s Got Talent and Bohlale Boikanyo rendering her poems, she became inspired and looked up to her, which made her also want to do the same, not only for her but for her community as well.

“I grew confident with every performance and got an invitation to a poetry session in Nelspruit – it was my first paying gig and the nicest part is that I was the youngest,” she detailed.

“I get opportunities to recite my poems at big events such as eMalahleni Fashion Week, Jazz and Poetry Sessions, Tshwane Fashion Week, and many more,” Mmabatho said.

Mmabatho in the next aspiration wants to see herself hosting big, and better events for her upcoming poets that she is still sharpening in the artistic industry.

“It is an underrated yet rare talent in our community, and my goal is to change that narrative,” she concluded.
