Park event ends off well

The school holidays have come to an end and with it the BMX and Skate - Back to the Street event programme hosted by Highveld Mall.

The main focus of the Back to the Street event was to encourage and develop the skills of amateur skaters and BMX tricksters.
The event saw a lot of young local talent earn their stripes on the ramps and rails of a pre-constructed skate park.

Pro Ramps have been responsible for the construction of the park, which has been erected near the Highveld Mall Food Court entrance.
Competitions were held over the two weekends of July 11 to 13, and 18 to 20. The park was kept open during the week, giving avid skaters and BMX riders a chance to learn and practice their new skills.

“We are so proud of the Skate and BMX Park which we set up for the school holidays. The course, built by Pro-ramps, was competition grade and offered the kids of Mpumalanga the opportunity to skate professional ramps for the first time ever. Most of the 100 or so kids that made use of the course had never even seen a ramp before, and we literally saw them progress during the programme. The resident pros coached the kids and have instilled in them an even deeper love for this fast growing street-sport. We hope to offer this facility again in the future,” said Sandra van der Walt, Highveld Mall general manager.

The categories and their winners are as follows: first place amateur skateboarder Justin Bezuidenhout; second Michael Stylianou; and third Siyabonga Mokoena.

Most progressive skater went to local boy Kemisetso Mashinini, best trick amateur went to Justin Bezuidenhout
Hardest slam went to C.J Magatsela and most enthusiastic skater went to Dylan Magorokosho.

Best pro-trick went to David Woolf, he is a pro-skater with his ‘Nose blunt down the rail’ trick. Second best pro-trick went to Adam Woolf with his ‘launch to bank melon transfer’. Third place went to Dean Marais with his backslide 5-O down the ledge.

All in all it was a memorable event and Highveld Mall plans to make it part of their annual holiday programme calendar.
