Your road to recovery starts with a breakthrough

After years of statistics, headline articles and hard truths, eMalahleni finally has a rehab centre.

At last, eMalahleni has a rehabilitation centre.

Breakthrough Wellness Centre  opened its doors earlier this year.

In a recent post, one of the centre’s councillors wrote, “Let’s talk real talk about getting back on track after dealing with substance abuse. It’s more than just kicking a habit – it’s like taking a deep dive into your soul. In this gig called recovery, there’s a game-changer – accepting that you’re not perfect.”

In this spacious office, a lot of tears was shed.

The centre is committed to providing high-quality care and support for individuals seeking help with addiction.

“We understand that physical, mental, and emotional well-being is intertwined.”

Patients come together regularly and just talk about life.

The dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, therapists, nurses, and addiction counsellors are trained to provide personalised care and treatment plans tailored to each individual’s unique circumstances and needs.

One-on-one sessions are very important.

The programme includes assessment, medical tests, therapy and counselling, assisting in lifestyle changes, after-care, and relapse intervention.

“We’ve all got quirks, scars, and some pretty messy chapters. But guess what? It’s these imperfections that can be the secret sauce for turning things around. So, let’s roll up our sleeves and dig into the game-changer that is accepting and owning up to our flaws on the wild ride to recovery. It’s not always easy, but it’s the kind of realness that paves the way for some serious healing and growth,” said one of the counsellors.

The sad reality is that it took years since 2013 when it was pointed out that eMalahleni has the second-highest rate of abuse in the country for someone to step up and open a rehabilitation centre.

In a relaxed atmosphere, patients can open the books of their past and share stories.

In 2013 the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development spokesperson, Ronnie Masilela said, “I can confirm that eMalahleni has a big drug problem and has the second-highest rate of abuse in the country according to research conducted by the Medical Research Council.”

A dedicated team is ready to stand by any recovering addict.

The Democratic Alliance back then said they would write to the national Police Minister, Bheki Cele, and the Mpumalanga MEC for Safety and Security, Gabisile Tshabalala, requesting that urgent steps be taken to establish a Specialised Narcotics (drug) Unit to curb the scourge of drugs in eMalahleni and surrounding areas.

“Despite the Medical Research Council stating that 42% of drug abuse-related cases in Mpumalanga are recorded in eMalahleni, which is the second-highest rate of drug abuse and drug-related activities in South Africa, the Witbank Police Station does not have a specialised drug busting unit,” was a statement from the political party.

Felifcaf Madiyanike, a supervisor at Sanca shared some jaw-dropping statistics.
The youngest patient at Sanca is only 12 years old.

Teenagers start experimenting with dagga, which is the gateway to self-destruction. Nyope is a growing threat in the community.

“We are very thankful for intervention as this city’s drug abuse is spiralling out of control,” Madiyanike said.
