Hundreds of coal mine workers hit by new round of layoffs in eMalahleni

Retrenchments are on the cards for more than 800 workers.

Retrenchments at Seriti’s Klipspruit Mine and Glencore’s iMpunzi Mine have wrapped a blanket of uncertainty around eMalahleni.

Ms Linda Khuluse from Seriti confirmed that the company has started with retrenchment processes at the Klipspruit Colliery which is expected to impact up to 605 workers.

Glencore has not responded to any of WITBANK NEWS’ correspondence and Transnet which has been labelled as the entity responsible for the retrenchments promised to provide more insight into allegations of poor performance.

Thapelo Malekutu of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said the failure of Transnet to provide trains to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) for the export of coal is having a significant and detrimental impact on the region.

Malekutu said they have on several occasions proposed that Transnet be privatised.

“Allow the private sector companies with locomotives to utilise Transnet’s tracks and pay Transnet for the service. This would be a win-win for both employees and workers, and there are companies ready to step in and address the situation immediately.”

“It is with a heavy heart that we received the news of the proposed retrenchments at iMpunzi and Klipspruit. This situation is a glaring example of poor management and the impact thereof on people and their well-being. It is unacceptable that the workers must carry the joke of the poor management,” said Annemarie van Heerden, Solidarity Helping Hands regional coordinator for Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal North.
