Lynnville resident survives carjacking attack

During his escape, the victim overheard the assailants communicating with other individuals, potentially their collaborators.

The tranquil streets of Lynnville were marred by a terrifying carjacking on Saturday evening, as Richard Mathumbu found himself at the mercy of three ruthless suspects.

The incident transpired around 19:00 when Mathumbu was driving through the unlit streets of Lynnville, his car windows down due to a widespread power outage.

As Mathumbu navigated the darkness, three unknown men suddenly materialised, startling him.

One of them brandished a firearm, while the others demanded his vehicle. In the face of this dire threat, Mathumbu acquiesced, and the suspects swiftly commandeered his Volkswagen Polo.

The ordeal took an even darker turn as the suspects ordered Mathumbu to drive them away from the scene.

However, in a moment of daring, Mathumbu discerned a critical vulnerability – there was only one firearm among the three culprits.

Fuelled by desperation and fear, he decided to resist, but tragically, the assailants overpowered him and subjected him to a brutal assault.

“I was in mortal fear and knew I had to make a desperate escape,” Mathumbu recounted. “The sound of those gunshots spurred me into action, and I ran for my life.”

During his escape, Mathumbu overheard the assailants communicating with other individuals, potentially their collaborators.

“They were discussing their next moves with someone else. It was chilling to hear their plan,” he added.

He also noted the presence of another black car at the scene, adding an ominous layer to the incident. “I don’t know if that car was involved or not, but it was there, and it was part of the terrifying scene,” Mathumbu said.

Vosman Police are actively investigating the ordeal, and Mathumbu is appealing to the public for help in locating his stolen vehicle (Registration number: JCS 972 MP).

He implores anyone who spots his car to contact him urgently at 072 682 6278 or report the sighting to the nearest police station.

In the wake of this alarming incident, Mathumbu has issued a stern caution to fellow nighttime drivers in Lynnville, emphasising the need for vigilance.
