Casual day celebrating people with disabilities

The invited organisations shared their challenges and pointed out that there is still a lot that needs to be done.

A casual day was held to celebrate people with disabilities and show that they are being loved, cared for, and they are special.
Different stakeholders came together with one aim and that was to show love, care and support to people with disabilities.

The Thungela-sponsored event was held at the Lynnville Park on Friday, September 1.

The invited organisations shared their challenges and pointed out that there is still a lot that needs to be done so that they can feel part of the society of eMalahleni, as some feel neglected.

Representing the executive mayor, Trudy Xhala-Mavimbela, manager of the Transversal Unit said the mayor wanted to attend the event, but because of other commitments, she could not make it, but passed a message of support to the organisers of the event.

One of the organisers of the casual day celebrating people with disabilities, Mr Marvellous Nyandu.

In her message, Xhala-Mavimbela said that it was important that people with disabilities stand up for their rights, and they were prepared to support them as the municipality.

“The municipality has done a lot to show their support to people with disabilities. Houses in Klarinet have been built for them and there are other programmes, especially for people with disabilities. We do not want to leave them behind because they are part of society. We also want to thank the private sector for coming on board in doing some of the programmes. I want to encourage people with disabilities to come together and fight for their rights. They must also belong to centres so that they can learn different skills; the centres must be centres of excellence,” Xhala-Mavimbela pointed out.

Xhala-Mavimbela also praised people with disabilities like Sipho Tyobeka and Chankie Moloto, both presenting a show at Emalahleni FM raising points that ‘disability is not inability and helping other people with disability’.

The event was organised with other stakeholders and organisations like Sisizeni Foundation, KwaGuqa Disability Centre, Melokuhle Foundation for people with Albinism, ANC Youth League and the ward councillor.
