Glencore partners with the South African National Council for the Blind
Glencore’s Tweefontein Complex worked with dedicated surgeons from Witbank Provincial Hospital to perform vision restoration cataract procedures.
Glencore’s Tweefontein Complex recently collaborated with the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB).
Together they commemorated the second year of their partnership with the successful completion of vision restoration cataract procedures at Witbank Provincial Hospital.
Through the partnership, 22 community members with cataracts have regained their sight and experienced a profound improvement in their quality of life.
In a media statement issued by Glencore, the institution outlined that it worked with a dedicated team of surgeons who not only assisted in performing the cataract surgeries but also helped raise awareness about eye care and the importance of regular check-ups to prevent avoidable vision loss.
“Cataract is known as the clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye, this forms when protein builds up in the lens of one’s eye and makes it cloudy.
This keeps light from passing through clearly and can cause the affected party to lose some of their eyesight, thus negatively affecting their quality of life,” the statement read.
Dr Mthethwa, Surgical Assistant at Witbank Provincial Hospital mentioned the collaborative efforts alongside the SANCB have not only brought back the gift of sight to those in need but have also fostered a lasting positive impact on the community.
“The joy and gratitude expressed by the recipients and their families have been immeasurable, validating the importance of such humanitarian endeavor’s,” said Mthethwa.
