Emalahleni Warriors set a good example

In the times where youth are losing their way due to drugs and alcohol, it is encouraging to see a group of youngsters committed to doing the right thing.

A basketball team does their practices at dilapidated grounds in Ackerville.

The boys have been playing basketball since 2002 and they were discovered and are managed by Mr Kgaogelo ‘Bra Nico’ Mokwena. The team members call him Bra Nico, while the team is known as Emalahleni Warriors. It was officially formed in 2014.

These boys are focused and basketball helps them stay focused. They love the game and they want to be a good example to other young people in the township. The players urge other youths to stay away from drugs, live a healthy lifestyle and respect the elders. The team’s vision is to:
*Develop basketball in Emalahleni;
*To fight against drug abuse;
*To promote a healthy lifestyle; and
*To bring back the youth pride.

The team consists of nine players who show commitment in spite of the poor infrastructure at their basketball court.
Some government officials have promised to intervene and improve the condition of the court in July after the new budget has been discussed.

The team has played against others in the township, doing very well, and aims to play in the championships. The team invites anyone who is interested in playing basketball to come, age and gender don’t matter.

Bro Nico is a family man and he joined the team because he was highly impressed to see such dedication from these young boys in these challenging days. He makes time to be part of the team and his team loves him.
“I am really proud of these boys,” said Bra Nico.
