Deputy Minister visits eMalahleni to encourage a greener tomorrow

Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts said that these cleaning and anti-pollution campaigns must help us to restore the dignity of individuals who are involved in recycling.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts embarked on an Imbizo in Emalahleni Local Municipality. 

In her last leg of the Mpumalanga District Model Imbizo in eMalahleni the Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Ms Bernice Swarts joined by the MEC of Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mr Mandla Ndlovu, the District Mayor for Nkangala and the Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Councillor Conny Nkatitshana. 

The Deputy Minister led the teams and started with pothole-patching at Willie Ackerman Drive, and continued with the planting of trees at various parks in eMalahleni and KwaGuqa Disability Centre.

The Imbizo aims to fast-track service delivery and mitigate challenges that the community members and country at large are grappling with, such as the high unemployment rate, neglect and vandalism of government infrastructure, rising poverty levels and inadequate delivery of basic services.

The litter was also removed.  

“It is important that young people from eMalahleni study the new sciences that can create new industries that are more environmentally friendly to avert the dangers of climate change. There are immense and exciting new possibilities with these new energy sectors. We do not want eMalahleni to be left behind or to become a ghost town one day,” said Swarts.

Swarts also said that she hopes that the youth will work hand in hand with communities and continue planting trees to green the world and protect the environment.
