Help Nelson Ngubeni’s learners get to Dubai for an International Spelling Bee

In a bid to represent their school and country at the International Spelling Bee in Dubai in September, the learners are appealing for financial help.

Two learners from Nelson Ngubeni’s Primary School will compete in the International Spelling Bee in Dubai in a spectacular demonstration of spelling talent.

This comes after they both won and got trophies at the English Spelling Bee competition, which was held in Durban on October 9, 2022 and featured 23 students from various schools across the province and the country.

Magdeline Siwela took first place, with Gugulethu Mashiloane coming in second.

In a bid to represent their school and country at the International Spelling Bee in Dubai in September, the learners are appealing for financial help.

Delani Ngema, their teacher, showed his support for the learner’s plight.

Delani said, “The learners were performing well, but since they started with the spelling bee, they have been performing extremely well in all the subjects, particularly in English. Apart from spelling bee certificates and medals, the kids won many certificates and trophies for excelling in their academics.”

The International Spelling Bee in Dubai is one of the most prestigious and difficult spelling competitions in the world and the fact that Magdeline and Gugulethu have entered the tournament to compete speaks volumes about their abilities.

Magdeline and Gugulethu expressed their excitement at the prospect of participating in the National Spelling Bee but appealed to well-wishers for support.

Siwela said, “I feel excited and nervous at the same time since it is my first time going to Dubai. I believe I will win this spelling bee competition because I have been practising. I want to be a geologist after I complete university.”

“Words can never describe how I feel. I am just so happy that I will be going and representing my school as well as the country. I love English, mathematics, and science. I want to be a neurosurgeon after I finish school,” said Gugulethu.

“They must enjoy themselves and try to learn as many new things as they can. Fly our school and the national flag high. I’m very proud of them, and I believe they will bring the trophy home,” Delani added.

Any individuals or organisations interested in supporting them can contact their teacher, Delani Ngema at 073 306 4410.
