Arrive Alive conducts Easter Road Safety Campaign on the N12

Arrive Alive Acting Deputy Director for Road Safety Education Thiyezi Bekwa encouraged passengers to be alert as that will assist the driver.

A rest stop was conducted by Arrive Alive on the N12 Road between eMalahleni and Ogies to raise awareness of road safety and to encourage motorists to rest every when they are travelling long distances.

 

 The rest stop was part of the Easter Road Safety Campaign which was launched to reduce road accidents as well as fatalities and to also motivate road users to be safe and vigilant at all times.

Arrive Alive Acting Deputy Director for Road Safety Education Thiyezi Bekwa encouraged passengers who make use of public transport to be alert as their fatigue is contagious to the driver as well, “It is very dangerous for the passengers to fall asleep as that could affect the driver. We encourage motorists to proceed with caution and to be safe at all times. Our goal is to conclude the Easter holidays without any serious accidents or fatalities, we would have reached our goal. Lawbreakers will not be spared, as traffic officers are a part of the rest stop to check compliance.”

 

Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Clr Conny Nkalitshana was present at the Arrive Alive rest stop.

Also present at the campaign on Thursday, April 6 was Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Councillor Conny Nkalitshana, who engaged with motorists during the roadblock.

 

The mayor emphasised the importance of being extra cautious whilst on the roads in a statement, “I would firstly like to wish everyone Happy Easter holidays and a safe travelling journey. As road users increase during this busy time, we are here today as Emalahleni Local Municipality to urge the community to exercise more vigilance and care on the roads whilst in compliance with traffic laws,” the statement read.

Overall, the operation managed to stop a total of 121 vehicles, of which 18 were public transport vehicles.

 

All public transport vehicles stopped on the day were roadworthy, in good order, and had valid licenses.

 

Trucks were inspected at the stopping point.

Three warrants of arrest were issued by law enforcement during the campaign and 13 summonses to the value of R15 500 were also issued.

 

Emalahleni Fire Department managed to stop six heavy motor vehicles and five tankers, one tanker had an expired fire extinguisher and one bowser was without a permit.
