Ma-Indies had to bend the knee against Wizards last weekend

Coal City Wizards finally ‘kicked’ the goalpost in their favour when they won their first match of the season this past Saturday, March 11, in their home territory at the Puma Stadium.

Coal City Wizards got their first win of the season which enabled them to move away from the bottom half of the table.

 

Wizards beat fellow strugglers Ma-Indies 3-1 at a game played at the Puma Stadium on Saturday, March 11. 

 

The Limpopo side is winless after playing five games and is perched at the bottom of the table.

 

Ma-Indies started by attacking Wizards and their forward Bontle Matshwi testing Wizards goalkeeper Princess Ngqwala with a shot in the opening stages of the match. Ma-Indies were punching holes in the Wizards’ defence trying for an early goal

 

The Ma-Indies right winger Tshwelo Mpuru had a shot going over the cross-bar. Wizards star of the match Phumla Simelane failed to take advantage after being set on a pass by Amo Mpudi. 

 

While Ma-Indies were pressing hard and they were rewarded when they scored their first goal through Vuhvi Sithole to make it 1-0. 

 

Ma-Indies attacked and they left gaps in their last line of defence Wizards took advantage to score an equaliser with a long shot to make it 1-1 after the goalkeeper failed to hold the ball. 

 

At the other end, Ma-Indies Mokgadi Nkosi nearly scored with a header. Wizards Yonela Keto played well in the middle of the field while Phumla and Amo played and connect well leading the Wizards’ attack. 

 

With the score at 1-1, Wizards gained the upper hand when they scored their second goal in an empty net. 

 

Wizards captain Sixolisile ‘Malume’ Gumade played her heart setting a good example as a leader.  Ma-Indies Pamela Mgunguyeka and the side captain Dineo Mfati both had chances to score but failed.

In the second half with Wizards controlling the match and both teams making substitutes, Wizards goalkeeper was injured just after the start of the second half and play had to stop. 

 

Wizards forward Phumla was back in the picture when she nearly scored and her shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Ma-Indies Tshwerelo Mpuru nearly scored and her shot went wide. 

 

Phumla scored Wizards third and final goal leading to the celebration of the first win of the season. 

 

The team played well, but it can still improve going forward and needs local support.

 

Wizards played their next game against First Touch away on Saturday, March 18.    

 

Elsewhere in the Super League, there were plenty of shocking results over the weekend. 

 

  • TS Galaxy Queens were the first team this season to take points off Sundowns Ladies, with their Sunday afternoon fixture ending in a 1-1 draw. 
  • In another surprise win JVW were beaten 2-1 by the newly promoted side, Copperbelt Ladies. 
  • The University of Pretoria grabbed another win against the top side, by beating Royal AM 2-1 at UP Stadium while UJ’s blistering start to the season continued as they thumped Thunderbirds 4-1.
