Traffic at Klarinet railway crossing may soon be ‘under the bridge’

Motorists in Klarinet may be relieved to hear that the chaotic traffic caused by the railway crossing in the area may be ‘leaving the station’.

The complaints and frustration of motorists in the Klarinet area seem to have made a loud enough hoot as the Mpumalanga Premier announced the construction of a new bridge over the railway crossing at Klarinet.

The crossing is the cause of much frustration for motorists who regularly deal with chaotic traffic to and from home.

Numerous motorists complained about vehicle accidents, hours of traffic and standstills at the railway if a train is stationary.

What steers the matter further off the railway is that use of alternative routes is not always an option.

Some explained that truck breakdowns occur on the Jackaroo Road and place them in a similarly frustrating traffic situation.

Travelling around Ferrobank is also not a better route to a solution for some as the road does not lead to their homes.

The Verena Road can also not operate as an alternative as it

is full of truck traffic when residents and workers wish to travel home and to work.

“The traffic experienced is unlike ordinary traffic in the city as it endures for hours, sometimes even into the night, resulting in us arriving home late and being on the road in unsafe conditions. Not only are our lives in danger, but also those of traffic officials when they try to regulate the traffic,” said a concerned motorist.

Another motorist explained that there are two lanes in both directions at the railways at Pap & Vleis.

However, she said, motorists become so impatient that they try to overtake each other but cause chaotic traffic in up to four lanes in the process.

“I understand other motorists’ frustration. However, their annoyance and impatience cause a risk to everyone’s safety when they try to overtake in this manner. The train is sometimes so long that I have found myself waiting for it to pass for about 15 minutes,” she said.

Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane has announced the construction of a new bridge over the railway.

The Premier made the announcement on Friday, February 24, during the 2023 State of the Province Address in Mbombela.

“We will build a bridge from Emalahleni city centre leading to Pine Ridge, Klarinet, Siyanqoba and Verena to improve safety and ease traffic flow in that area,” Mtshweni-Tsipane said.

The Premier said the planning and design will commence in the 2023/2024 financial year.
