Man arrested in Clewer after being caught red-handed behind the steering wheel of a hijacked vehicle

A suspected hijacker's journey hit the brakes in Clewer when he was caught in the driver's seat of a courier vehicle hijacked in Komati, Blinkpan on February 14.

A suspected hijacker had to make an unexpected u-turn in his crime endeavour when he was arrested on February 14 in Clewer for allegedly hijacking a white Toyota Avanza courier vehicle in Komati, Blinkpan on the same day.

The success follows a collaboration of resources between the Car Tracker Company, the Middelburg Flying Squad Unit of the SAPS, and Vispol members from Witbank SAPS.

According to reports, law enforcement agencies immediately activated their resources to pursue suspects after the hijacking.

Car Tracker Company had a pivotal role as they alerted other stakeholders, including the police, about the incident.

Law enforcement proceeded to Clewer, where they all assembled.

The white Toyota Avanza was spotted with one occupant.

The car was tactically approached, and the occupant was cornered.

After searching for the vehicle, the team realised that the car was the one they were looking for.

The team managed to recover some of the items allegedly stolen during the hijacking of the vehicle.

A pistol, for which the suspect produced a license, was also recovered.

The pistol recovered on February 14.

However, the police are of the view that the suspect could perhaps have used the firearm during the hijacking incident.

The man was arrested and is expected to appear before Witbank Magistrate’s Court today (February 15), facing a charge of possession of suspected stolen properties.

According to the police, the suspect could be linked to the hijacking incident.

At this stage, the police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspect as the investigation continues.

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, applauded the efforts displayed by various stakeholders that produced the desired outcome, especially in the fight against theft, robbery and hijacking of vehicles in the province.
