Residents’ cup ‘runneth’ over with frustration

Residents were stunned by astronomical high municipal bills this month.

Residents are upset about above average water bills they have received this month.

Ms Alta Potgieter spilled her cup over a ridiculously high water account she received this month.

“This account has never been in arrears. Suddenly the municipality bills us R39 171.18 for an ‘outstanding’ water account,” Potgieter said.

She said the municipality is aware that their water meter is broken, but they allegedly never attempted to fix it.

“I am sure they just make up amounts as they go along,” Potgieter said.

Ms Candice Nortje is also livid.

She said she was at the local municipality to make arrangements on her arrears account after the attorneys responsible for debt collection were given the boot.

‘I signed a contract with an arrangement of R304 per month. This month when I received my account my payment arrangement was R610. My water went up from R400 to R1 500 and this is while nobody is at home during the day,” Nortje said.

A local business owner, Mr Cameron Mackenzie said his account suddenly jumped from an average of R16 000 per month to more than R25 000.

“There is no explanation from the municipality,” Mackenzie said.

Readers commented on social media and said that someone had to pay for the water distribution losses because bursting pipes are not a new thing in the city.

By the time going to press there was no clarification from the municipality regarding the unusually high water accounts.
