A small gesture can make a child happy this Christmas

It is easy to make a difference in a child’s life.

Christmas is only a few weeks away and with that comes the sad reality that there are children who will not receive a gift.

But, according to Ladies Circle 26 Witbank, that should be the reason why the community can get involved in the Santa Shoebox Project.

Each year the Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes personalized gifts of essential items and treats for underprivileged children throughout South Africa and Namibia.

The Santa Shoebox Project originated in Cape Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes.

Now in its 17th year, South Africa’s best-loved children’s charity, the Santa Shoebox Project, has reached 1 077 289 underprivileged children in total.

The success of the project can largely be attributed to its personal nature – donors give gifts of essential items and treats to children whose names, ages and genders are known.

The minimum eight required items are a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a washcloth, sweets, a toy, school supplies and an outfit of clothing – all new, unused and age-appropriate.

“PEP Stores is our one-stop-shop for all Santa Shoebox contents,” said Ms Amy Gallagher from Ladies Circle 26 Witbank.

Put all liquids, like cosmetics or blow bubbles, into a ziplock bag, so that the contents cannot leak out and spoil the shoebox.

Also, include extra batteries with battery-operated toys or choose a non-battery-operated alternative.

Amy said it is so easy to make a difference in the life of a child.

The first step is to get a shoebox and decorate it.

“In decorating the shoebox you can get really creative. Instead of using conventional wrapping paper, you can decorate your box with drawings, paint, cutouts and stickers.

This box can become a unique keepsake for the recipient of your gift,” she said.

You can also drop off your shoeboxes at Cambridge Academy on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29.
