Big changes coming to N4 Mandela Bridge
The co-owners of Highveld Mall took it upon themselfs by doing their part on making our N4 safe.
With Witbank having reached maturity, if not still growing, one common town planning challenge is that of improving infrastructure to accommodate the population growth.
In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion over the N4 highway and Mandela Road Bridge, which affects time convenience for all commuters using this route, we decided to take it upon ourselves to address the problem.
The co-owners of Highveld Mall have therefore successfully completed a R5m roadworks project to improve the flow of traffic over the N4 Mandela Bridge.
This project, the design of which was approved by Sanral and TRAC, was five years in the making and we are proud to have contributed yet again to improving our town.
The project saw the widening of the road approaches from both directions, allowing for two lanes of traffic to cross the intersections at the mall and at the N4. An extended transition lane was added thereafter, where the two lanes of traffic merge before crossing the bridge.
Traffic counts show that 50% of the traffic using the bridge in an easterly direction turns right towards Johannesburg or Pretoria; hence an additional right turn lane was added to allow for double the right-turn stacking volume, with a dedicated straight ahead lane towards the eastern suburbs.
The project also included the synchronisation of the three robots between McDonalds and BMW, resulting in a more efficient commute to and from the mall.
The roadworks were completed during August this year and have clearly made a tremendous difference in traffic flow over the bridge.
We would like to take this opportunity to urge all road users to feel free to double stack on Mandela Road approaching the bridge, merge respectfully thereafter, and enjoy the additional shopping time that the rectification of the traffic flow has added.
