Get your planner out for these upcoming SPCA events

Adopt and support the SPCA with a fun walk.

Apart from having lovely pets up for adoption, the Witbank Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will be hosting a fun walk for you and your furry friend this weekend.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Soireé Women’s Agricultural Union and other stake members.

Coco.

The big walk will start at Plot 41, Margaretha Street Seekoei Water on September 24, at 08:00 and will cost only R10 per person and R5 per dog.

On the day the Witbank SPCA will also have fun activities and a photo board.

Sandy.

There are also prizes to be won.

Rabies tends to be one of those conditions that everyone has heard of, but very few people know a great deal about.

It is zoonotic, meaning it can be passed from animals to humans and poses a significant threat to both being almost always fatal.

Brandy.

Therefore, understanding the condition and what you can do to prevent it should be a significant priority for all responsible pet owners.

Rabies is a serious infection of the brain and central nervous system.

It is rare in domestic animals, but when it is passed to them, it is usually because they have been bit by a wild creature that has been infected with the disease – most often wild animals including bats, and foxes.

Cotton.

This is because the infectious virus particles are retained in the saliva of the infected animal.

Once bitten, the virus passes into your pet’s body where it replicates in the cells of the muscles and the nerve fibres, eventually travelling to the central nervous system.

The virus does not reach full strength immediately and instead can take up to 4 weeks to develop.

Beyonce.

However, once your pet reaches the point that the symptoms become apparent, the virus spreads rapidly and painful death can occur as quickly as within 10 days.

With all of this in mind, the Witbank SPCA recognizes the importance of getting animals vaccinated and will be hosting a vaccination event for those who can not afford the costs associated with their local vet.

On September 28 at the SPCA premises, there will be free rabies vaccinations available.

There will also be five in-one vaccines available at R100 per dog but these will not be made available to breeders or litters and there are only 50 vaccinations available.

For any information regarding the big walk, adoption, donating or the vaccine event you can contact Carike Roux at 082 724 0909 or during office hours at 013 650 2321.
