Though the walk was not well attended, Pastor Mabena says he understands as they were many events taking place on the day and the cold weather was not favourable for a walk.

He indicated that he was aiming to organise another walk because he believes that the elderly need at least 150 minutes of walking in a week or 75 minutes a week of vigorous activity such as hiking, jogging, or running.

He says: “Regular physical activity for the elderly is one of the most important things they can do for their health. It can prevent or delay many of the health problems that seem to come with age. It also helps their muscles grow stronger, so they can keep doing their day-to-day activities without becoming dependent on others.”

Walking is one of the most popular types of physical activity. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 145 million adults include walking as a part of their physically active lifestyles.

Pastor Mabena believes that walking is a surprisingly powerful way to strengthen muscles, bones, and connective tissues as well as reduce body fat, increase endurance, and improve cardiovascular health.
