Policeman to appear in Witbank Magistrate’s Court for alleged bribery

Corruption within the ranks of the men in blue was the reason the bullets flew in Highveld Park last night.

A policeman is expected to appear before Witbank Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of corruption and an additional charge of attempted murder.

He was arrested last night, August 2 in Highveld Park after a shootout between him and other SAPS members from the National Anti-Corruption and Intervention Unit.

The 45-year-old Warrant Officer who is a member of the Organised Crime Unit at head office is suspected of receiving a R500 000 bribe after an undercover operation.

The member called the complainant and allegedly demanded cash for clinching a deal at a local coal mine.

It is further said that the cash was dropped at a particular where the member is said to have collected the cash and left in a white Nissan NP300 bakkie.

It is alleged that the Warrant Officer opened fire on his ‘colleagues’ when they tried to stop him. They in return also returned fire.

He was arrested and charged accordingly but taken to the hospital where he is under police guard.

The police also managed to recover an undisclosed amount of cash at the scene.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has applauded members for the arrest whilst condemning acts of criminality allegedly committed by members of the service. “We can never allow a situation whereby members involve themselves in criminality. Internal investigations should also follow,” said the general.
