Man to ‘retire’ from tyre business near Verena after suspected arson

Residents on the Verena Road were upset as tyres were set alight. This they say, is not only air pollution but also very dangerous as the smoke apparently made driving unsafe.

Burning tyres on the Verena Road had locals up in arms last week.

Complaints streamed in when black clouds of smoke decorated the blue skies on Friday, June 3.

Further investigation led to a farm where tyres were still smouldering from the intense heat of the fire.

The owner of the farm, Mr Ed Rossiter said he suspects arson as someone has set fire to the tyres.

“I have lost a lot of money now that they have been set alight,” Rossiter said.

He said two men apparently came to the farm and wanted tyres, but were not prepared to pay for them.

“They got angry when I told them it is a business and not a charity, and the same night the fire started,” he said.

He said he decided to put a stop to the tyre business.
