Motorist’s safety on eMalahleni roads is a concern ‒ criminals are on the lookout for the next target

Criminals are often lurking in the dark. You are an easy target when after driving over spikes your tyres are flat and you have to stop.

Motorists should be aware that there is no safety on the roads around 21:00 because criminals are out of control.

This comes after two alleged carjackings in eMalahleni within a week, both of which occurred around the same time, but on different dates.

On Wednesday, June 1, a man was allegedly hijacked on the N4 National Road between eMalahleni and KG Mall, Ferrobank after he drove over spikes and got a puncher. He stopped along the road to change the tyre when white VW Polo stopped behind him and two men insisted to assist.

After repairing the tyre, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm, and the victim fled into the bushes. The suspects left with a white Mazda BT50 bakkie with registration number KFJ917MP and a stock of vehicle parts.

According to reports, on Saturday, June 4 at KwaGuqa Extension 14, a foreign national stopped at the stop sign and was then approached by four males; three were armed with firearms.

The suspects opened the doors and one pulled and dragged him out of the bakkie. The victim fled to the nearest house, but the gate was locked.

He screamed for help and the suspects found him and put him in their white Ford 7-seater Kombi.

They stripped him of his clothes and drove him around the location.

After allegedly assaulting him to obtain the correct pin, the suspects allegedly withdrew and transferred an undisclosed amount to a Forex account.

The complainant was given his bakkie’s key and after the suspects discovered that the victim is on standby and at the victim’s work; if they can’t get hold of him, they will track the bakkie.

The vehicle was found in Saagmeel in front of stand number 151, where the suspects had referred him.

To summarise, be cautious when driving at night, especially on the N4. After receiving information about an armed robbery, a scenario that allegedly occurred again on the N4, but between KG Mall and Kromdraai off-ramp on Friday, June 3 at about 18:30, when the complainant with his crew driving a Dyna truck got a puncher, they stopped along the road to change the tyre, and while they were busy, a Silver VW Polo stopped behind them and two men insisted to assist them.

After fixing the tyre, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and demanded their belongings as well as the truck key.

According to police, one suspect has been apprehended.

Detective Lieutenant Colonel Poppy Mahlangu can be reached at 082 600 8532 if the community has any information about these crimes.
