Khalimaba Freedom market a huge success

Dates for the next market day are yet to be confirmed, make sure you don't miss out on the next market day

With the sound of jazz music playing in the background, it was all systems go when people had come together to celebrate with food, drinks and entertainment during Freedom Day celebrations.

The setting was at the Khalimamba Freedom Day market held at Ngamoni Street in Lynnville, an initiative of Ms Dudu Mdaka.

The people interviewed pointed out that they really enjoyed themselves during the event, they added to say that such events are needed.

African dishes were on the menu, local bands and exhibition stalls displayed talents and their products.

The royal queen wife of the late King Senzankhona Mahlangu together with her daughter Nokuthula Mahlangu exhibited chillies and chilli sauces.

Nokuthula said she learned the skill from her mother, and it takes her three to four hours to make the chilli sauces and about 45 minutes to make the chillies.

Maria Lerutla from KwaNdebele said she enjoyed the food, especially the African dishes, while Thokozane Mabaso said the atmosphere was good and the setting was good as well. He added to say this was one good way to promote local businesses.

“I enjoyed the cow’s head meat with pap and chakalaka with cabbage; it tastes very differently, but nice,” said Ms Pinky Mhlangu.

Arthur Molefe was providing the people with Lengana, an African pure gin drink, during the Kalimamba Freedom Day market held on Wednesday, April 27.

Venancio Matsinhe exhibited his pencil art drawings.

Thatho Simelane had Afro centric fashions while Octavia Shabangu displayed her beaded bags with Nokuthula Makhubu’s hair products on display as well.

Ms Mdaka said: “The event went well, people were happy and entrepreneurs happier and looking forward for another opportunity. The turnout was good, even though it was a busy day. Freedom for me is to have a right to express yourself, but mostly to be able to think independently, which is the reason behind the Freedom Day Entrepreneurs Street Exhibition and to bring local businesses to get together to build manufacturing and supply chains from eKasi, to better our local economy.”

Ms Mdaka added to say that they were already busy with the plan for their next event, coming in June.

Dates of the next event are to be confirmed, because they are aiming to open an everyday market spot, to be able to grow their businesses and create jobs within the communities, locally and in the province as a whole.

“Many thanks to our sponsors Mr Yeye Mokoena, Mannkie Mabuza and Ms Mary Mahamba,” concluded Ms Mdaka.
