Traffic Awareness Day – drivers could check status of traffic fines
Motorists sighed with relief as they received a reduction in their fines.
As the Easter holidays are approaching, Emalahleni Local Municipal Traffic Department invited the community and all road users to a traffic awareness day to check the status of their traffic fines to avoid disappointments at the upcoming Easter roadblocks.
The awareness day was held on Saturday, April 2 at the Highveld Mall where traffic authorities assisted people by monitoring the validity of their traffic fines as well as paying fines.
Ms Nonhlanhla Mahlalela, administration officer at the traffic department, said that they are assisting members of the public with outstanding traffic fines, which they check to see if they have, and if they do, they provide a 50% discount.
People do not want to go to the municipality offices, so “we are bringing the service to people at malls. We usually do it once a month in different complexes in eMalahleni,” she added.
Mr Samuel Sibiya Chief Traffic Officer of Emalahleni Local Municipality said the awareness is going well; they see motorists and members of the public coming to enquire, and those who can pay, are paying, and those who were not aware that they had traffic fines, were informed and had the opportunity to make arrangements to pay their traffic fines before any warrant of arrest is issued.
“For now, they are just inquiring and getting information. We don’t need to be making arrests here; we just making them aware of the outstanding traffic fines,” he added.
The chief traffic officer finally stated that this is one of the programmes that the mayor has encouraged them to continue doing, so they are constantly carrying out those operations in various areas under the jurisdiction of the Emalahleni Local Municipality.
