Woman left angry after purse stolen from her bag

Rialta had been in the sweets isle in a grocery store when someone bumped her and apologized. After some time, Rialta noticed that her bag was opened and her purse was gone.

Loosing your valuables in a public area can be frustrating, especially if no one can account for it. This was the situation of Rialta Marais, who unfortunately had to leave the store without buying what she had intended to buy as her wallet was stolen.

Rialta had been in the sweets isle in a grocery store when someone bumped her and apologized. After some time, Rialta noticed that her bag was opened and her purse was gone.

“I suspected that it is the person who bumped me because no one else had come near me. I was busy talking to my children in the sweets isle; I didn’t think that someone would steal from my bag as I was holding it the whole time. I reported this immediately,” said Rialta.

The security personnel heard of the matter that was reported by Marais and went to check on their surveillance system. That was when Rialta noticed that most of the cameras don’t work and there was no camera in the sweets isle.

“I could barely see myself in the camera, yet I had been in the store for a long time, and had been to many isles. Now I have to go register for my ID, driver’s license, bank cards and other important documents that were in my purse,” added Marais.

Sergeant David Ratau, communications officer at Witbank SAPS said that people need to be vigilant during this time of the year as many people loose their valuables.

“People need to be more cautious as criminals are always looking for their next victim. I would advice people to have limited things in their bags. Make sure that your bag is always closed and close to you. Many people like leaving their bags in trolleys which gives thieves the chance to steal. I also urge stores to have a strong security system as they are also vulnerable during the festive season,” said Ratau.
