The future is green in Siyanqoba

Farming has become a new norm that has changed many lives.

Local farmers in Siyanqoba have recently put this to the test after being given a piece of land to plant and harvest their greens.

The seven diligent farmers started the project early last year as they were unemployed and wanted ways to feed their families. Many of the farmers are females who have young children. As the project commenced, the farmers reached out to the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs to ask for help, which they received in abundance.

The department donated and installed seedlings, JoJo tanks, wind mills, equipped their boreholes, equipped irrigation and installed fencing among many things. Local businesses and community members were hired and recruited to install equipment that was donated to the farmers.

The department also went the extra mile to provide training in the agricultural environment. The farmers learnt more about production input and vegetable production training while in the process.

“Our vegetables are unimaginably big and we would love to sell it to businesses around eMalahleni. This is not only a job, but a passion that feeds our families. The department has done a lot and it is up to us to keep this project running for years to come,” said Sizakele Maphosa, one of the farmers in Siyanqoba.

The farmers plan to build relationships with other stores to be able to supply vegetables to them. The program has plans to supply vegetables to government nutrition programs for schools and hospitals.
