A warm ice-breaking success

Not even the icy June wind could deter the runners or wipe off the smiles on the faces of both spectators and participants.

The Coaldust Road Runners Club’s Ice Breaker Marathon (sponsored by Highveld Mall and Sportsmans Warehouse) on Saturday June 14 was a smashing success! Over 400 athletes participated in the event.

Ages ranged from three-year-old kids to the 60-year-plus Grand Masters. Over R20 000 worth of prize money and sport prizes were awarded to participants on the day. Each athlete received a medal for either the 14km Marathon or the 4.9km Fun Run. The race was registered and approved by the Athletics South Africa (ASA).

The runners from Middelburg came ‘flying’ in to the finish line.

A lot of positive feedback from the runners was received after the spectacular event.
“I was so looking forward to the Icebreaker race hosted by Coaldust, The Highveld Mall and Sportsmans Warehouse, that I registered three weeks in advance and the event was nothing short of what I expected. I truly hope that the icebreaker becomes an annual calendar insert at The Highveld Mall. Thank you for a great run!” said one of the participants, Monica Joao.

Nico Bronkhorst from Cambridge Academy also gave his thanks and wrote to Henri Gouws (Highveld Mall’s marketing manager): “Thank you very much for including us (Cambridge) as a water point in your Ice-Breaker marathon the past weekend. It was a well organised event and a memorable experience; as it built a lot of spirit among our staff members at the stall as we were waiting in anticipation for all the athletes to come passed the water point.

Besides all the refreshments (water, jelly beans and sports drinks) sponsored by other companies at our water point, we also had the Cambridge Mascot entertaining the athletes to make their running burden a little lighter. It was a very enjoyable morning and we are looking forward to be part of this event in 2015, so please count us in for next year.”

A special thanks goes to race-organiser: Derek Reilly (Coaldust Road Runners Club) and sponsors: Simon Morolong (Sportsmans Warehouse) and Henri Gouws (Highveld Mall), as well as the following:
