These yummy, different-shaped cookies are a great family activity and are not only easy to make but fun for the kids to decorate, too.

Forget busy shopping malls and crazy crowds. The only thing you need to keep your child busy and happy today is a baking tray and a mixing bowl!

Most kids love spending quality time with mom, dad, granny, or grandpa in the kitchen. Baking with your kids also enhances their fine motor skills.

Mixing ingredients, rolling dough, and using cookie cutters are all great ways to enhance a child’s fine motor strength and control, which are needed to develop academic skills such as writing, cutting, and colouring-in. It also increases maths skills as baking involves a lot of measurements such as cups, teaspoons, and tablespoons, as well as fractions and addition and subtraction proficiency. Get them in the kitchen to help you bake this five-star, flop-proof cookie recipe.

How to make different shaped cookies

This recipe is pretty easy. Let the little ones do the mixing or help you cut out different shapes with the cookie cutters. They’ll also love decorating their cookies afterward. If you don’t have animal cookie cutters – use whatever you have at home.

Ingredients

  • 360g (3 cups) cake flour
  • 3ml baking powder
  • 2,5ml (½ tsp) salt
  • 220g unsalted butter, softened
  • 200g (1 cup) sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 10ml (2 tsp) vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl and set aside.
  3. Place the softened butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on high speed until pale and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and beat to incorporate.
  5. Reduce the speed to low and slowly add the flour, beating well until combined and a soft dough forms.
  6. Remove dough from the bowl, divide in half, place between two sheets of baking paper and roll out to a 5mm thickness per batch. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your shapes. You can also use leave shapes or any other animal shapes you have that will fit into the theme.
  7. Place the cookies on the baking tray and bake in the preheated oven until crisp and golden, 10 – 12 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven, allow to cool and then decorate with melted brown and white chocolate.
