Vosman Police engaging with community on Freedom Day

The GBV Awareness Campaign held on April 27 was a way of educating the community.

Vosman Police celebrated their Freedom Day by engaging the community of Empumelelweni in a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness Campaign.

The GBV Awareness Campaign held on April 27 was a way of educating the community about the dangers of crime, GBV, and illegal substances like drugs. This awareness came as a form of celebrating freedom.

The initiative of the awareness campaign came after several cases of crimes like robbery, theft, and gender-based violence were reported at Vosman Police Station lately. During this awareness, Brigadier Lindelani Ndlovo lashed out at community members who fail to solve problems in peace, but instead resort to violence as the solution. Brig Ndlovu explained that 30 cases of assault with intentions of causing were reported and 38 suspects were arrested. Brig Ndlovu further said that even though not all cases fall within GBV, some do and that is why they made this awareness as police.

This campaign was led by the crime prevention commander, Colonel Lekabata Maepa in cooperation with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) which was led by local chairperson Mr Ronald Tshintsha Thobela who always informs the community to provide the police with information about criminals. “Crime can be squeezed if the community could work together with the police at all times. Together we can end crime and create a safe society,” said Colonel Maepa.

Police handed out pamphlets that had relevant information like how to break the silence when confronted with GBV and other related criminal activities. These distributed pamphlets carried a strong message which provides safety hints information to alert and arm the community on how to prevent crime.

Gogo Adozinala Maziba said she was very ecstatic to see the police visiting and checking how they are settled as the community. “I was not expecting such a wonderful visit from the police especially on Freedom Day; it shows that our police officers do prioritize us as the community. They gave me a booklet that has the information about what must I do when I face problems, and they have explained everything to me that the booklet has, therefore I now know that when I’m in danger, I will simply call 08600 10111. I do wish that they can do this daily,” said Gogo Adozinala.

Brig Ndlovu also sent a strong message to the liquor owners who are held bend in breaking the Level One Lockdown Regulations by selling liquor beyond the stipulated time. “The selling of alcohol beyond the stipulated time contributes a lot in criminal activities that are taking place here in Vosman. People are being raped and robbed whenever they come from taverns, therefore I would like to tell the tavern owners that they will be held accountable for all these activities because they are the ones who are breaking the law by selling alcohol, beyond the stipulated time,” said Brig Ndlovu.

The community was urged to work together with the police to bring an end to crime, as it is the only way of creating a healthy and safe society. The community was further urged not to take the law into their own hands, but to report any wrongful issues to 08600 1011 or Captain Elizabeth Mkaudi at 079 891 4842.
