Robbers on a ‘shopping spree’ through eMalahleni

In a blink of an eye, robbers get the ‘goldmine’ by hitting various businesses the past week

The past week a wave of business robberies went through eMalahleni as if robbers went on a shopping spree, yet again.

On March 11 it was reported to Witbank Police Station about a robbery that occurred at a local hairdresser.

It was alleged by the complainant that three unknown men entered the business and demanded the staff to not move while one of the suspects was pulling out a firearm.

It was further alleged by the complainant that the suspected robbers asked all of them to put down their phones on a nearby table and go to the bathroom.

It is believed that robbers fled the scene in less than five minutes and the building manager was informed about the robbery that occurred. On the CCTV footage, the suspects were spotted where they left in a white Volkswagen Polo.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken, but no arrests have been made yet. On March 12 two small businesses felt a knock after being robbed from an undisclosed amount of cash, cell phones and cigarettes. In the first incident, the shop owner alleged that he was busy cashing up when two men came into his shop and demanded to give them the cash he just counted.

It is believed that the one suspect was armed and pointed the owner with the firearm.

They fled the scene and no arrests have been made yet. Just as the first robbery occurred another call came through to Witbank Police Station about another business robbery where it is believed that two men entered a local liquor store as ‘clients’ but were cold criminals after pulling a firearm on the staff member at the till.

It is alleged that the two suspected robbers demanded the cashier to lie down on the floor while they robbed the business.

The suspects fled the scene on foot and no arrests have been made.

On March 13 a jewellery shop was hit for the second time in a month when two suspects entered the shop by pretending to be clients.

It is alleged that the two suspects wanted to see the watches when one of them showed the staff member on duty a firearm underneath his jacket.

They demanded the victim to open the doorway before they robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of jewellery.

WITBANK NEWS reported on February 7 that the same jewellery store was hit by armed robbers.

No arrests have been made, but the police are still investigating this increase in business robberies.
