Double check that your vehicle’s doors are locked

Never assume that your car doors are all locked, always check them before walking away.

Always make sure that all your vehicle doors are locked before you walk away from your car after you have parked it.

We always hear about car jamming in shopping centres or parking areas, but this seems to be a new way of gaining access into the cars.

On the video you can clearly see a person speaking on a cell phone. A vehicle pulls in next to where the person is standing speaking on the phone.

As the vehicle stops, the person which was speaking on the phone moves closer to the vehicle.

As the driver of the vehicle climbs out, the person speaking on the phone opens the back door slightly.

Once he has opened up the door, he walks away from the vehicle.

The driver is unaware that the back door has been opened, closes his door and then locks the car.

Just like any person would, the driver walks away from the vehicle and goes into the shops.

Once out of sight, the person that was speaking on the phone walks back to the vehicle and opens the car door.

He then takes a bag off the back seat and runs away.

Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson from Witbank Police Station sent out three steps to prevent vehicle jamming as it’s the second incident where the same motive is used.

  • When leaving your parked vehicle, always double check that your vehicle is locked by testing the doors after pressing the immobilizer button.
  • Make sure you assess all immobilizer devices and security systems in a regular basis. If there are any faults, contact an authorised service provider to fix or replace the faulty system with a recommended device.
  • Always store personal items such as sunglasses, cell phones and even groceries in a locked boot or glove compartment and not where they are visible. This reduces the temptation to steal.
