Blanchville bridge still on the to-do-list

This was the main reason for the contractor to withdraw because of the late payments from the municipality’s side and intimidation.

This year will reach the five-year mark since the bridge in Second Avenue in Blancheville flooded. WITBANK NEWS reported about the incident and the continuous follow-ups since 2016.

“It’s been three years that the fixing of streets and the bridge in Blancheville is on the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). As this is a five-year plan, every year it has been overseen,” said the councillor for Ward 20, Roy Cronje.

In the first attempt at fixing the bridge, the contractor hired to rebuild it was on-site for two years and was only paid for the materials delivered. This was the main reason for the contractor to withdraw because of the late payments from the municipality’s side and intimidation.

“The contractor left the site and did not hold the municipality liable for the violation of contract breaches. There were funds available in the budget to complete the work, but due to late payments and delays on the municipal side, the work has not been completed,” Cronje added.

Unfortunately, residents will be waiting a while longer for this process to start as appointing a new contractor to do the work will take longer as it still has to go through the supply chain process.
