A 44-year old mother was arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into the holding cells where her son was kept after he was arrested for possession of drugs.

The mom now also faces charges of possession of drugs.

She appeared in Witbank Magistrate Court on January 4 and her case was remanded until January 11. She remains in custody.

Her 24-year-old son was arrested on January 2 when Witbank visible policing members were busy conducting stop and search operations as part of operation festive season.

“The members saw a suspicious looking man in the central business district area and they searched the suspects and allegedly found four pinches of drugs in his possession,” said Capt Eddie Hall police spokesperson.

He was arrested on the spot and appeared in court the following day on charges of possession of drugs.

The young man’s mother went to the police station on January 3 and requested to visit her son.

“The members explained to the mother that due to the Covid-19 Disaster Management Act regulations visits to prisoners are not allowed. She then requested the cell guard to give her son some toiletries as he might need it,” Capt Hall said.

The police members first searched all the toiletry items and to their surprise, they saw that the toothpaste holder was cut open at the back with a plastic holder inside.

The members pulled out the plastic and found three pinches of drugs that the mother allegedly intended to smuggle into the cells.
