SAPS crack down on gender based violence crimes

The operation was held by members of Witbank visible policing, detective services, and was supported by the SAPS air wing unit

A hovering police helicopter had many people going to social media asking what is happening in eMalahleni over the weekend.

As the searchlight from the helicopter lit up problem areas, SAPS were ready on the ground to react.

“On September 19 and 20 Witbank SAPS conducted an operation all over eMalahleni area to address contact, property and armed robbery crimes in the city,” said police spokesperson Capt Eddie Hall.

The operation was held by members of Witbank visible policing, detective services, and was supported by the SAPS air wing unit.

During the operation, a total number of 19 suspects were arrested.

“The operation also focused on the prevention of gender based violence to ensure a safe and secure environment for all men, women and children.”

A woman was arrested for alleged murder and four were arrested for alleged gender based violence.

A suspect was arrested for allegedly having drugs.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol will not be tolerated,” Capt Hall said.

He confirmed that two suspects were arrested for this offense.

Shoplifting landed two suspects behind bars, and one suspect was arrested for allegedly taking something that does not belong to him.

Alleged assault saw three people in cuffs.

Copper theft is still a huge headache in this area.

Two suspects were arrested for allegedly being in possession of copper.

A suspect was arrested for malicious damage to property.

Two suspects were arrested for alleged rape in sexual assault.

Witbank SAPS station commander Brigadier Sifuso Cele sends a strong warning to all men and women who are in relationships that gender based violence in the form of physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence will not be tolerated and perpetrators who commit these crimes will face the full force of the law.

“A total of 51 suspects have been arrested since September 1 in the Witbank police station policing precinct for gender based violence related crimes.”
