Entries for the GTR2020 virtual race are open

Entries for the Greatest Train Race can be done up until August 21.

2020 is the year of change and the Greatest Train Race (GTR) committee embraced that and to ensure that the beneficiaries still get the help they need during this very difficult and unpredictable year, it was decided that the largest charity race in Mpumalanga sponsored by Glencore will be a virtual one for this year.

Not only will the race be a running or walking event but cycling was added into the mix as well. You can enter one or both.

Entries can be done up until August 21.

So how does it work?

  • Sign up on the website www.gtr.co.za, select your distance and pay the registration fee.
  • You will be allowed to complete your run or cycle any time between August 1 and August 22.
  • You have to however complete the total distance they entered for in one-go.
  • After the virtual race, runners post their times online and will then receive their virtual medal and certificate.
  • There are real medals and one of a kind buffs available to purchase.
  • There are different packages to choose from.

Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Cycling South Africa (CSA) race rules will apply.

“A vast number of community projects have benefited from the race during the past 30 years and the GTR event remains an important Rotary community investment project driven by the community for the community,” said Charles Deiner the GTR 2020 committee chairman.

There are different sponsorship opportunities still available for small to large businesses as well as private individuals and organisations.

“The race committee would like to appeal to companies in the surrounding communities to seriously consider becoming partners in this worthwhile community venture,” said Deiner.
